My Favorite Things: August 2014

Hope you all had a great Labor Day! It was H-O-T here in Connecticut, but Matt and I managed to take a hike with Griff and Harrison. It was so humid that we were sweating before we even got to the trail, but it felt good to get out and about in between naps. We know the colder weather is just around the corner, so we’re trying to really take advantage of the next couple of months.

Today’s post title is pretty self-explanatory. It’s a list of my favorite things for August. I’m constantly tearing things out of catalogs that I want for myself (or others!). I’m going to try to consolidate all of those tear-outs in one spot. Here’s a small collection of things I’ve fallen in love with over the last month.

This set of party glassware. Even straight-up water would taste better in cute glasses like these. ($26.50, Fishs Eddy)

This vintage looking scale. ($63.99, Amazon)

Typhoon Novo Mechanical Scale

How sweet is that? We use the food scale a ton in our house. If I wasn’t currently trying to scale back on stuff to free up counter space, it would be on my counter for sure. For now though, the slim scale that fits in the cupboard does the trick.

On our trip to Maine last month, I fell in love with this cotton throw that was in one of Camden’s Main St. shops. ($243, Jo Ellen Designs, Brahms Mount) It’s seriously one of the most beautiful throws I’ve ever seen and the softest throw I’ve ever felt.

Brahms Mount of Maine

They have dozens of vibrant colors. The throw itself is made in Maine (Go USA!) and I’d love to have one of them one day. It makes for a really special wedding present, too!

I happened upon this paperboard cake stand* for parties. ($9.08, Amazon)

Meri Meri Cake Stand

Even a plain cheesecake would look fancy on that bad boy, no? I bet if you’re careful, you could wipe it down and get more than one use out of it. It could also work as a cute, inexpensive hostess gift.

These storage bins look cute with kids toys in them, but I’m kind of digging them for myself. ($29-$49, Land of Nod)

Land of Nod Kneatly Knit

Laundry, shoes, dog stuff… the list is endless.

One of the finishing touches I will add to the kitchen when the time comes is a pendant light over the sink. This is a handmade light fixture I found on Etsy that has a definite nod to the school house history of our home. ($108, oldebricklighting.etsy.com)

Olde Brick Lighting

The artist’s Etsy shop is pretty impressive - he makes all of the lights by hand and you can customize finishes.

The dog days of summer are still ahead of us, so I thought something like this would come in handy. ($139, Home Depot)

Directional Ceiling Fan

Yep, a directional ceiling fan. Kind of genius, right? Most of the fans I’ve seen have damp ratings, making them ideal for porches and sun rooms.

I’m also digging this print from Sandra Jacobs. ($17.99+, Art.com)

Jewels of Nature

I don’t have a spot for it, per se, but I’m digging it nonetheless.

So there you have it. A few things that caught my eye over the last month. Do you ever rip out pages from magazines and catalogs to keep them fresh in your memory?

*Speaking of cake stands… a couple of months ago, HGTV magazine had a feature on other uses for pretty cake stands (besides displaying cakes) and I thought they were pretty clever:

-Tiffany Brooks uses a cake stand to hold a pencil cup, paper clips and sticky notes on her desk.

-Drew Scott arranges different-size candles of one color on a cake stand and uses it as a centerpiece.

-Vern Yip thinks a cake stand is a great way to display your family’s most recent birthday or holiday cards.

Pretty smart, right? Just something to keep in mind when you find a cute one but your husband thinks it’s a waste of money for how many times it’s actually used… ;)
