Trying to leave our little slice of America better than we found it!We Planted A Wonky
May 13, 2013
One of the birthday presents I received from Matt was a tree. Yes, a tree. I asked for it because I wanted one, and really, what better gift is there for a nature lover (minus the bugs) than a living thing that enriches the soil and cleans the air? I’ll tell you. There isn’t a better gift out there. Period. We went to a local nursery that was having a sale on weeping cherries because I find them whimsical and charming, and a lovely complement to the enormous weeping willows scattered throughout our property.
Candlestick Dessert Tray
May 10, 2013
I know I don’t have the greatest track record when it comes to crafting. I’m no Martha Stewart, and I know that. Believe me. That being said, I have a new project that’s sort of crafty I wanted to share with you guys! Last month’s issue of Real Simple had a tidbit about creative uses for old things featuring candlesticks. This is a shot from their magazine where they repurposed candlesticks as bud vases.
Vampire Tree Slaying
May 6, 2013
Before I get into the details of the demise of our “vampire tree,” let me give you a quick recap of our Do Nothing Weekend. It was mostly successful. We didn’t get to every project we laid out, but we did our fair share, with a few unexpected projects thrown in, too. Bonus - we even had a few minutes to lay on the chaises on Sunday. :) A nursery trip to get a couple of new plants to celebrate Spring 2013 Plant said new plants Mulch new plants Weed existing gardens Cut down a vampire tree and maybe a vampire branch The vampire branch is in the backyard and that will be for another day.
Hellloooo, Do Nothing Weekend!
May 4, 2013
Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Halleeeluuuujaaaahhh! Sing that a la Handel’s Messiah, if you know it… It is here. It is finally here. After a small countdown and much anticipation, OUR “DO NOTHING WEEKEND” IS HERE! Now, do not confuse the “do nothing weekend” with a “don nothing weekend,” where we go about our business in the nude. I kid, I kid. Does anyone really do that? I thought it was a funny play on words.
Ridiculously Blessed
May 2, 2013
It was my birthday yesterday. Yay, me! My goodness, are birthdays fun. Matt and I kicked off the celebrations in Home Depot. Shocker, I know. We just had to stop in to pay for our new countertops! Woot! The color is Edisto, as in Edisto Beach, SC. Or so I think. Google and I worked together, and that’s our best guess. After the counter top debate, we ended up forgoing the laminate for a solid surface top.
A Bahamian Excuse
April 24, 2013
I’ve heard the complaints. Loud and clear. “Are you still working on the house?” “Are you still writing on your blog? You haven’t posted in a while!” “I live for your blog and I’ve missed your writing terribly!” Okay, that last one is made up. I’ve been a bit absent on the blog the past couple of weeks but I have an excuse. I spent the last 7 nights here.
Two Dirty Hands Later...
April 6, 2013
Ten sore fingers and two dirty hands later, one of my gardens has gone from this: to this: I know it doesn’t look like much (yet). But it will. Oh, it will. Once it has some plants and some mulch, we’ll be in business. This garden sits on the left side of the bulkhead. I tackled the right side of the bulkhead last spring. You can read that post here but here’s a quick recap.
A Scattering And A Smattering
April 3, 2013
We’ve been busy little bees around here at School House Rehab. Well, I’ve been a busy bee. Matt doesn’t associate with the blog - until I threaten to use one of his power tools without him - then he’s all over it, naturally. I have a scattering (it’s a real word) of projects all over the house and garage and garden, but nothing final to share with you. Instead, I’ll share a smattering (also a real word) of pictures showing what I’ve been up to lately.
Run For The Families
March 25, 2013
It’s been over three months since the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy in Newtown, CT. Back in January, I signed up for a 5K to honor the families affected that day. Good friends of ours are close with the Engel family, who lost their daughter Olivia Rose in the shooting. Our friends were running in memory of that little girl and all of the people affected, and I was proud and honored to join the “Running for Olivia Rose” team and join the larger support effort.
A New Pantry For $30
March 20, 2013
Happy Spring! Finally, it’s here! The ground is covered in snow and it’s freeeeezing, but it’s technically Spring. Hallelujah. As promised, I’m kicking off Spring with a fresh project that’s putting a spring in my step. Here we go… I’ll start with a disclaimer - it’s not quite a “new” pantry for $30 as stated in the title of this post. It’s actually an updated pantry for $30, but really, it feels new to me so I’m sticking with that.
