Trying to leave our little slice of America better than we found it!

May Day love

May 8, 2012

I received SO much love on my birthday last week. I don’t even know where to start thanking people. Matt was so sweet and cooked me breakfast, dinner, AND cleaned the house. Whoa. My parents had some of my bests over and grilled me a delicious barbecued meal. It was perfect. The gifts were too much as per usual. I’m getting too old for presents, people! You want to hear about the loot, eh?

Colorado Trip, Part 1

Disclaimer: what you are about to read is a bit wordy. It highlights the first leg of our vacation in Colorado, so please feel free to scroll just the pictures if you fall into any of the following categories: -You are a slow reader -You’re reading this in the bathroom at work and only have a couple of minutes to devote to my award-winning prose -I bore you Matt attended a conference that took place in Denver in March, and I was excited to tag along with him and spend some quality time with my sisters (who both live there).

Fresh heat

April 30, 2012

Did you get a chance to read this post about the start to our kitchen re-do? DO IT. On our to-do list for the kitchen was to find a solution for the heat registers that sit under the big back window on the back of the house. They were rusty and gross, half gray and half ivory. We looked into replacing them but found it would be well over a hundred bucks to do so.

Sore wrist Sunday

April 30, 2012

Holy cow, it’s Monday night already! Why yes, I had quite the productive weekend, thank you for asking. Matt and I had one of our beloved “do nothing weekends” this past weekend, and all of last week we discussed what house project we wanted to tackle while we had the sched wide open. It was a battle between tackling an upstairs bedroom with new baseboard trim, fresh paint on walls/trim or some much needed garden projects in the backyard/sideyard.

School House Lore

April 27, 2012

I’m adding a trip to the town hall to my to-do list. Since this house is sort of historic, (but not officially) I really want to pull out the old deed registers, building permits, and tax assesments to get some dirt on the house and maybe even come across old photos! I wanted to share something else crazy - when an appraiser came to assess the home’s value, he said that he didn’t think our old school house was built in 1875… In his professional opinion, he dated the house back to the 1820s… so cool, right?

The things I do...

April 27, 2012

Griffin has become quite accustomed to my baking him fresh dog treats. The spoiled brat! Why yes, yes, I do give in to his demands. Come on, he looks like this. I made 54 of those bad boys the other night. I have a quick (under a half hour) and easy (4 ingredients) recipe of whole wheat flour, all-natural peanut butter, milk and baking powder — they are so much better for him than treats from the store, and way cheaper, too.

Stairway to Heaven or Stairway to Hell?

April 23, 2012

Growing up, the staircase in my house was awesome. How can a staircase be awesome, you ask? Memories. It was a simple fold back design (up a small flight, two landings, and up another small flight in the opposite direction) but it was so much more than a staircase. My sisters and I would learn to crawl up those stairs, then toddle, then walk, and eventually take them 3 at a time.

Not a fan...

April 18, 2012

…of this, that is. Blech. I am a big supporter of many things gold. For example, I love gold earrings, (they’re the only ones my delicate ears will allow!) gold flats with dark jeans, the gold bracelet Matt gave me on our first Christmas together, my brother-in-law, (Mr. Gold was an old college nickname for him) the gold-ish brown eye shadow I wore on my wedding day, this dress, and the golden color of my main man.

Heeeyyyy Buddy!

April 17, 2012

I received a sweet bird feeder from my mother-in-law for Christmas that I adore. I’ve become quite the avid bird watcher. Maybe the term ‘bird watcher’ is a bit strong. I’m not that girl roaming nature trails sporting the matching taupe vest and oversized hat with sweet clip on binoculars but nonetheless, they fly in hot and heavy and I get all bothered. It makes me so happy when a little one flies in to feast, but I can rarely name the type of bird.

Happy belated Easter!

April 9, 2012

Happy Easter and Happy Passover to you! Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend. I had a little slot of time Easter morning before we headed down to my parents and I took advantage of it so I could relax bake. Griffin, however, relaxed all morning. When he heard the camera through the back window, he perked up, but only momentarily. But back to my morning. When I said I had to “bake” before, please know I use that term veerrrrrry loosely because in fact, I picked a dessert recipe to bring to my mother’s that required NO baking.
